In the month of January this year as I turned nineteen I thought to myself that it was time I started taking up some responsibilities and one of my prime responsibilities was to register to vote. As I started filling the voter application I realized that our country was filled with many politicians who were in the field of politics from the time I was born. Old ,experienced politicians starting from our very own prime minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh, prime ministerial candidate of B.J.P- L.K.Advani , foreign affairs minister- Pranab Mukerjee, leader of congress party-Sonia Gandhi, defence minister-A.K.Anthony, railway minister -Laloo Prasad Yadav, chief minister of Tamil Nadu-K.Karunanidhi , leader of AIADMK party-Jayalalitha ,former finance minister now union home minister -P.Chidambaram and the list goes on. The above mentioned politicians are between an average age of 60-70 years. India is the second largest populated country in the world and about 70% of the Indian population consists of the youth below the age of 35. A question arises in my mind as to how the youth are going to relate with these old yet experienced politicians mentioned above? I guess I figured out an answer to that question myself. We need ’‘mediators’’ and these mediators should arise from the group of vibrant, educated Indian youth. In other words, we need young people to join the field of politics.

To be a politician one needs to have various skills. One needs to have skills like good oratory, power to lead, courage, strong beliefs and confidence. Such skills are very evident in the Indian youth, but unfortunately we don’t have young people entering this field. Our country has only a handful of young Indians in politics,to name a few; Rahul Gandhi –the son of India’s two great politicians Sonia Gandhi and the late Rajiv Gandhi. He was born into a political dynasty where his father Rajiv Gandhi, grand- mother Indira Gandhi and great grand-father Jawaharlal Nehru have all served as prime ministers to the country. Rahul is now an Indian politician and a member of the parliament of India, representing the congress party. Sachin Pilot is another young politician, who is the son of late Rajesh Pilot who belonged to the Indian national congress. Sachin started his political career in the year 2002.In the year 2004 he was elected to the 14th lok sabha from the Dausa parliamentary constituency of Rajastan. At the age of 26 he became a Member of Parliament in the country. He is known to be the youngest politician of India. He is also a member of the consultative committee in the ministry of civil aviation. The other name that comes to my mind is his highness of Gwalior- Jyotiraditya Scindia. He belongs to the royal clan of the Scindia family. He is the son of Madhavarao Scindia. Jyotiraditya is the member of the 14th lok sabha of India representing the Indian National congress. It is a pity that only three names appear in my mind as to, who belong to the young brigade of Indian politics. We need to improve this current status of India. The widening rift between the citizens and the current political class can only be narrowed if we encourage more young people to join the field of politics in India.
A few years from now if we have young minds working together , India would then probably be called a "Developed country " rather than the cliched "Developing country"!!! So let us make a difference and bring about the change.
good points..we must all take efforts to change our country from developing to developed..
ReplyDeletei m happy with ur beatiful ideas towards our country,India...
ReplyDeleteits time INDIA should have young leaders........good topic..
ReplyDeleteIts a reality in India. Either you should be from a political family or you should be a criminal to become a politician.Thats the main reason you dont find young people entering politics.
ReplyDeleteIn India Politics is not considered as a decent profession and the politicians at present are of not any repute or qualification and to make any contribution you need to be from a political party and most of the members in the senior heirarchy of the party are people above the age of 60 and 70 years. This greatly apprehends people from the younger geeration from entering politics.
ReplyDeleteYes I completely agree with your thought..Our country INDIA, does need young leaders to bring about change in our present political scenario..
ReplyDeleteWe must take up certain responsibilites and one of them is to cast our votes for good leaders in order to change our country from developing to a developed nation.so all the young people out there go ahead and vote.
ReplyDeleteAfter i read your blog something struck me like a bolt!!!The young politicians u have mentioned are all from the old seasoned political families, which really irks ME. WHY NOT TAKE PEOPLE LIKE U TAKE POLITICS SERIOUSLY AND BRING ABOUT THAT CHANGE!!! We are with U!!
ReplyDeleteHi Divya .. Banu forwarded this blog to me ..
ReplyDeleteFirst off, well-written. But I have to disagree to a certain extent. Political wisdom comes only from experience and any wisdom comes only with age. Maybe this is why families of politicians "rule". They know what it takes because they experience it from childhood as a son / daughter of a prominent politician. Or they shy away but again only from knowing what it takes. Maybe that's why there's no politician from the Mahatma Gandhi family. He was too honest to be a politician and those are the values his family took. Whereas the Nehru family still thrives in politics doesn't it? If you ever want to get into politics, try surviving as a IAS officer or a lawyer first. Or ofcourse you could simply wield swords and capture booths!
But seriously, no point blaming politicians alone, we are the ones who vote them to power, we are the ones who shy away from standing for elected positions, we are the ones who leave the country in search of better economies, we are the ones who accept mediocrity, violence and abject social conditions as they come ..
The Jago Re - One billion votes - movement is a good place to start. Even if the 70% young, active minds just vote, they will be voicing their opinion.
Am really happy to hear there is at least a stirring up amongst the youngsters , my generation (in which I fortunately stand isolated atleast in this forum) at your age just chickened out and resorted to nothing more than cribbing.
